What are the reasons behind severe air pollution in NCR?
The recent smog attack in NCR was due to dust storms running over Middle-east and some drastic changes in climate. However, there are many local reasons for the poor quality of the air. The primary factors causing severe air pollution are emissions of various industries and large number of vehicles in the area.
The region is connected to many of the industrial states in north India like Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. Many of the heavy vehicles coming and going to these states pass through NCR. These vehicles release large amount of emissions that contains carbon. This pollutes the air to large extent. This is accompanied by the faulty public transport system of Delhi and NCR. Although, the number of public buses has lessened in past few years, number of personal vehicles has significantly. This also adds to the air pollution of the city.
National Capital reason consists of the capital city and most crowded cities like Gurgaon, Faridabad, Ghaziabad and Noida. These cities have the most number of job as well as business opportunities in India and it is main construction centre of the country. These major construction activities generate huge amount of dust particles due to lack of strict rules and regulations regarding the same.
Although some fuels like coke and furnace oil are banned in Delhi as they are hazardous to health, but smoke from industries of other states reach to the place making the situation worse. Some other factors which contribute in making the quality of the air in NCR poor are burning of garbage in the city and crops in neighbouring villages. This happens due to the failure in providing optional methods for the disposal of agricultural as well as domestic waste.
Effects of pollutions on businesses in NCR
It has been noticed by market research companies that the polluted environment of NCR causing driving away of top executives of corporate world and exceptional talent to the other cities. It is also prohibiting talent from foreign countries from coming to the city. People are also going for long vacations during the period of severe air pollution. This has hampered workplace efficiency in enormous way. It has also increased expenses are to be done on the air purification systems in the office. Businesses also have to spend both time and money on educating employees about the risks of pollution and measures of protection. Due to all these factors, the businesses are facing loss during acute pollution days. To be sarcastic, the only industry flourishing in such situation is the one connected to air purifiers.
The steps being taken
The Supreme court of India and National Green Tribunal have passed orders to close the industries which are not acting according to environmental standards. The usage of harmful oils like furnace oil is being banned in neighbouring states as well. The usage of firecrackers in also prohibited. The state government is taking steps to reduce the usage of private vehicles. So far they haven’t received great success. Rather than just making the laws, government must pay attention to implementing those rules and punishing the defaulters.
