The steps taken by the Government for automobile safety and current situation

In last few years the number of deaths occurring due to road accidents has increased significantly. The government has recognized this problem and cited the importance of taking steps for road safety for decreasing number of accidents, injuries and deaths due to the same. Year 2016 was important for the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways as road safety took the centre stage in all the activities of the ministry. Although, the ministry proposed for the expansion of National Highways network in India, it realized that it is not enough to just build the highways. It is very much important to make sure that those highways are safe enough for the travelers. The government has set many policies with the target of reducing accidents by 50% till the end of 2020. (iThe ministry is taking big steps towards achieving this aim by repairing constitutional framework, implementing engineering solutions to develop safe roads, setting standards for building safe vehicles, improving emergency care system and taking step towards enforcing traffic rules strictly.

The steps taken by the Government

The government of India has initiated following steps to ensure road safety in the country.

  1. Providing knowledge about road safety- The government is increasing its efforts to spread knowledge about road safety and other issues related to the same. The people are given the knowledge about reasons for accidents and steps taken to reduce the number. The motive behind this is to make people alert on the road and make them play a significant role in road safety.

  1. Create database for road safety information- The government is trying to develop a high-quality database regarding transport system, analysis of the same, investigations regarding the accidents with the support from states, union territories and local administrative bodies. This will help a great deal in ensuring safety on the road.

  1. Improvement in road infrastructure- The government is working towards implementing better standards for building the safer roads in rural as well as urban areas. Efficient as well as safe transport systems are to be used which will be designed based on the practices in use at international level. small business consulting firms are also advising construction firms to give emphasis on implementing advanced building strategies while constructing roads to ensure safety of the travelers.

  1. Safe vehicles- The vehicles running on the roads should be designed in such a way that they comply with the international standards of safety. They should be less risky when it comes to safety on the road. At the same time, the vehicles shouldn’t create any harm for the environment. To achieve this aim, the features of the vehicles must be examined at the designing level and should be kept under observation during production, usage, maintenance of the vehicles. Many automobile companies from outside are looking forward to this as India market entry strategy. They are extending their hands for developing such vehicles and in turn gaining remarkable profit.

  1. Safety while driving- The government is planning to take the measures in order to get only expert drivers driving the vehicles. This will be done by making the rules and regulations for acquiring the driving license strict.

  1. Better conditions for vulnerable travelers- The designing and construction of the roads will be done by considering vulnerable travelers like physically challenged people. The best practices will be used by architects, engineers, town planner and other related authorities to make these people safer.

  1. Emergency medical facilities on roads- Efforts will be made to people involved in accidents get quick and the best medical care. Government will also make sure that hospitals are built near national as well as state highways so that those involved in accidents get care immediately and sufficiently.

  1. Road safety education and law enforcement- Government will run campaigns to educate and train people in order to generate awareness about road safety. Additionally, the state governments will be helped by Government of India to enforcement of law more effective and uniform.

Strategy for implementation
The government agency National Road safety Board is formed to monitor the matters related to road safety. This board is to help government in designing policies for road safety. The fund is also being raised to fund activities on the road. Mergers and acquisitions firms in India are also providing suggestions to the government regarding the road safety matters.
All these steps are surely going to help in increasing road safety in India significantly in coming years.
